E30 M60 swap oil housing modification

m6x swap oil filter relocation and modification

BMW has a way of complicating things. They couldn't just have a simple motor mount arm holding up the engine. It had to be more complicated then that. So guess what they did? They ran the feed and return oil lines going to the oil filter through the motor arm itself!

This creates a small hurdle when swapping out the arms for our mounts so it fits in your e30 or e36. No need to worry though. We have a couple solutions to this.

CHOP it in half or get an x5 unit (Easiest route)

This is basically the easiest route. You cut and grind off the unneeded parts of the mount/oil block. That means cutting the mounting bracket off and leaving only the oil part of the mount. This is basically how the X5 unit came.

Tap block and go to -an fittings

This route eliminates alot of clutter but takes some skill. You can tap the block to accept -an fittings (although any other fittings might also work). However you will need to get custom lines to go from the fittings of your choice to BMWs weird oil housing fittings. This might get costly.

Remote mount oil filter (hardest route)

On the m62 the oil housing was not bolted to the front covers like it was on the m60. This makes if great for coolant hose clearance but means you need to find a place to mount the damn thing. So you can make brackets or ditch the setup completely and go to a completely remote mounted oil filter housing (like a summit racing unit). Basically you get the freedom of mounting a oil filter anywhere you please because you just make the lines as long as you want. This will still require welding custom fittings at the housing if you do not tap the block with normal fittings. Here are some pictures of this kind of setup.

Modified fittings vs stock bmw fittings (THIS IS ONLY NEEDED IF GOING WITH A REMOTE MOUNT OIL FILTER! STOCK OIL FILTER HOUSING DOESN'T NEED THIS MODIFICATION).
